Live Quiz for match-day engagement

A real-time quiz inside the club app. Fans could play during the match — from the stadium or from home — without leaving the product.

My role

I owned the design of the Live Quiz experience: the flow, the main states, and the interface for a fast, high-pressure context. I worked with product and development on something that had to stay simple even when the match was already going on.

The problem

During a live match the app was easy to forget. People watched the game, but had little reason to open the product at that exact moment. The quiz had to give them a reason to come back in, without getting in the way of the match.

The constraints

  • The person might be standing, holding food, or using the phone with one hand
  • The stadium is noisy, the connection can be weak, and there is little time to think
  • The quiz had to work for fans in the stadium and for people watching from home
  • A new user should be able to join quickly, without a long setup

The process

I started from the context, not from the quiz idea. The main questions were:

  • How fast can a person understand what is happening?
  • What happens if they join late?
  • How do we give feedback after each answer without slowing the game down?

Then I designed the flow around short states: join, wait, answer, result, next question.

What I designed

  • A short entry into the quiz from the home screen or match-day content
  • A thumb-friendly question screen
  • Clear states for waiting, answering, and seeing the result
  • A simple path for new users to join and stay in the product after the game

Entry point

How a fan finds the quiz during the match. It had to be visible, but not louder than the game itself.

Question screen

One question, large tap areas, little extra text. Designed for one-hand use in a crowded stadium.

Answer + result state

The person should immediately see what they chose and what happened next.

Leaderboard / waiting / states

Pause between questions and examples of some situations that may arise during the quiz.

After the quiz

The prize or next step stays in the app. The quiz should not end in a dead end.

I also kept a version of the experience for people watching from home, including a “Guess the Score” mode. The logic was the same: quick to join, easy to play, easy to understand.

Why not just use Kahoot

Kahoot works as a live game, but it does not keep the person in the club product. In this case the quiz had to do more than entertain. After playing, the fan stayed in the app, and the club could continue the relationship.

Live control for match day

The quiz also needed an operator screen. I designed the live control view so a club team could see the phase, start or extend the round, and show the stadium code without leaving the flow. The work here was the states — lobby, running, results — not a full CMS.

Result

The quiz helped increase meaningful app use during matches and supported the overall growth in active users.

I do not treat +50% active users as my personal number. It belongs to the whole product. My part was making the live experience easy to join and easy to play in a real match-day context.

What I learned

If the environment is difficult, the interface has to get simpler, not richer. In a stadium the best design is the one a person can use without thinking too much.
